February 2021 President’s Message

Justin White.jpg

by Justin White, Chapter President, K&D Landscaping Company

An update on the state of the industry: from all reports, 2020 was one of the strongest years for landscapers in history. With everyone stuck at home residential construction and landscaping skyrocketed in demand. The reduction of homeowners traveling and spending money on vacations also fueled the growth in our industry. Other sectors like commercial and public works installation also seemed to pick up pace in 2020 while commercial and hospitality maintenance took a hit due to low occupancy and work from home regulations. In total, I think it was a positive year for our industry despite many challenges along the way. With the wind at our back, 85% of landscapers nation-wide reported that they grew in 2020 and 90% expect to grow in 2021. What are your expectations for growth this year? Have you developed your 2021 plan and vision? The first quarter is a great time to sit down and outline your goals.

CLCA held our annual Leadership Conference in January. This was the first year the event was held completely virtually, although not being in person has its disadvantages, the ability to still meet over Zoom was great. We had the opportunity to learn from great speakers and teachers to help further our leadership capacity. The 2021 state board was introduced and our 2021 President Paul Hansen was sworn in. After he was sworn in as president, Hansen promised Leadership Conference attendees that he would serve with integrity and passion. “I want to carry forth the vision and mission of the CLCA in unity with the grassroots efforts being done with each of our local chapters,” he said.

Firescaping is the big news of the month. Our very own Phil Dundas has organized a great event for February 20th at 10:00am where he and other fire prevention experts will share tips on how to protect your home or business from future wildfires. We saw how quickly fires could spark up even in January, don't get caught off guard, make sure you attend this webinar.

The 2021 event schedule is packed with great events that we are hopeful will still happen. Right now we had to make the decision to postpone our supplier’s night for a later date in the fall. The risk of Covid-19 infection is still too high to have an in-person event this spring. We are working closely with the state board and will keep you all posted when the all-clear signal is given for us to come together again. We have a golf tournament that we are planning for early-summer and are hopeful it will still be able to go forward given the ability to socially distance ourselves during the activities. Stay tuned to our newsletters and E-blasts for more information.

I’d like to welcome a new associate member to our chapter. Mikhail Reyes with Enterprise Fleet Management joined the CLCA family last month and we couldn’t be happier to be growing in such a difficult time. We have a very strong base of members that have stuck with us through these hard times and I am very appreciative for that loyalty to an association that has done so much for our industry. Mikhail and his team offer a great option to your fleet management challenges, their turn-key solution to purchasing and leasing vehicles has helped our company K&D save money and time. They make it easy to onboard new vehicles and even take care of maintenance, DMV, graphics, and all the other issues that give you a headache when you think about growing your fleet. You can get in touch with Mikhail by emailing him at: Mikhail.Reyes@efleets.com

Lastly, I’d like to thank our board of directors and life members for always jumping in and volunteering their time to help advance the mission of the CLCA. This last year has tested us all and I am so impressed with the dedication and perseverance the team has shown. I am looking forward to seeing you all in person very soon.

To your success,
Justin White
