Welcome to 2020 folks! If you’re wondering where the last year went (or even the last decade), you’re not the only one! The positive side of an upcoming new year is a fresh beginning with fresh ideas. The 2020 vision for the central coast chapter is exciting; we want to provide more learning opportunities and promote more connections for our members. The first of these events is next week on the 15th at Pour Taproom in Santa Cruz. It’s a “no-host” get together with craft beer, cider and appetizers where you are encouraged to mix and mingle with other landscape industry professionals.
I’ll keep it short and sweet this month, leaving you with a quote that was shared with me from Alan Murray. It speaks to the opportunity that we possess to write our own future:
“More than any decade I can recall (in the six I have lived through), the next decade will be defined by how well we, as leaders, and as citizens, respond to challenges and threats to our foundational beliefs, structures, and institutions. Will we respond with wisdom, courage, accountability, and creativity to our climate, our political storms, our vast inequities, our soon-to-be-obsolete skills base and our deeply ingrained biases about each other and about how things “ought to be”? If we respond well we can turn these threats into glorious, transformative opportunities. If not, we will preside over tragedy. The transformation required to prevail also requires a transformation of ourselves as leaders and how we think and act. The decade has not been written, the pen is our hands.”
To our success,
Justin White

Come for the Central Coast Chapter board meeting (5-6:30 p.m.) and then stay to enjoy the mixer. We’ll meet at Pour Taproom, known for having a wide assortment of tasty beers, and various foods that go well with beer, soft pretzels, artisan flatbreads, salads, sandwiches, and hotdogs. It’s a comfortable meeting place for the happy group of folks that is the Central Coast CLCA. Come and meet friends old and new, we hope to see you there!
CLCA Central Coast’s 2020 Holiday Party and Member Appreciation Dinner
It was a large and cheery group at the Posse on December 5th. The new board was “sworn in.” There were Christmas Carols sung and a festive tree with lights, and a sea of gifts, white elephant gifts that is.
It was a large and cheery group at the Posse on December 5th. The new board was “sworn in.” There were Christmas Carols sung and a festive tree with lights, and a sea of gifts, white elephant gifts that is. We loved the venue. We loved the mixologist. We loved the food. We loved the music (a chorus of Christmas carolers, and Andrew Tuckman’s d-jaying. Katia Velasquez’s amazing attention to detail and organizational skills all came together to host this party with style and grace.
The UCSC Arboretum Home Garden tour was a big success this last spring, with eight small residential gardens ranging from the Santa Cruz Westside to Aptos. The individual homeowners did their own preparations, and the Arboretum Friends Board did an excellent job with organization, communication, set-up, direction of parking, and manned the tables at each of the gardens on the day of the event. It went very smoothly, and there were about 300 tickets sold. The gardens ranged from tightly designed urban spaces to larger lots that included edibles as well as ornamentals. Homeowners were delighted with the turnout and the opportunity to show their gardens to appreciative visitors. This year, the UCSC Arboretum would like to solicit gardens from among CLCA contractors’ clients and provide recognition for their work, hopefully to showcase larger properties that receive expert maintenance.
Please ask your clients, those who love to display their plants and designs, to consider being part of the 2020 event, we hope to have 5-6 gardens on the tour. The focus for the 2020 Home Garden Tour is “mountain properties”—from Bonny Doon to Soquel.
If you are interested in participating please contact Phil Dundas at The Landscape Company for more details.
Justin White will be speaking at the Lawn & Landscape Technology Conference, Feb 19-21 in Orlando, Florida! Industry professionals who have successfully integrated software and technology into their companies to operate more efficiently will make presentations.
An exhibit floor will give attendees a chance to learn about the latest technological advancements and find out which are the best fits to help run their businesses.
Whether you are already investing heavily in technology, or curious to learn where to start, this conference and trade show will help you become more knowledgeable about a rapidly changing topic.
