Central Coast Chapter Holiday 2022 Recap

by Regan Barry

Like all special events that are planned and orchestrated by our Central Coast Chapter leaders there is a compelling story to tell prior to the actual event itself as follows: The Holiday Party planning session started one stormy night many months ago with the event coordinators and committee volunteers grouped together sharing ideas on how to make this holiday party the best one yet. Suddenly the electricity went out and we were sitting in total darkness…wait a minute…that is not quite the way it happened but there still is an exciting recap to share.

From the beginning of the evening, in early December, as our guests arrived there was a scent of holiday cheer in the air. The table decorations by Martha and Gregory Miller, along with the resort's holiday trimmings, created a backdrop of celebration and good will. The room was a buzz with conversations and laughter. Old friendships were catching up, and new ones were kindling, as the evening wore on. The dinner buffet was excellent along with the dessert. As the dinner portion of the evening concluded our president, Phil Dundas, acknowledged our incoming board members for 2023 along with our guests and partners for their support and contribution to our Central Coast Chapter and the CLCA for being the True North for all of us, a guide and support to succeed as proponents of the green industry. Thank you Phil for your leadership last year and for upcoming 2023. Phil then turned over the floor to Shane White, from K & D Landscaping, to manage our “White Elephant” gift exchange. It was to say the least a wild event and most of what happened has been redacted.

There would be no party without our team of volunteers to make it happen. Thank you to Scott Long from Central Coast Landscaping for leading the charge in finding a suitable location at the Seascape Golf Club in Rio Del Mar to hold our event. Thank you to Gregory and Martha from Green and Growing Landscape for providing the conifer centerpieces and your work at the administration table to welcome our guests. Also we take pride in acknowledging the rest of our board of directors for all their support in making calls to our members to come celebrate the holidays with us and always showing up. Lastly but not least we want to thank Elise Huffman, newsletter editor, graphic artist and chapter rallying instrument,  Ki Bowman, media and Cathy Quinn for secretarial support in keeping us relevant and financially sound. We are “ CENTRAL COAST STRONG!” May 2023 be a great year for all!

Thank you to Regan Barry for your ongoing support and boundless energy. Thank you for writing this Seascape article.

Central Coast Members: Come Grow With Us at Cabrillo College

connecting the CLCA community with local horticultural education—your input is vital

by Michael Johnson, Cabrillo Horticulture Department instructor

I’ve been a CLCA Central Coast Chapter member for 10 years and I greatly appreciate the relationships that I’ve developed with many of our contractor, architect, designer, and vendor members. Along with my wife, Sherry Bryan, I’m a partner in California H2orticulture Services (CHS), which provides irrigation design, auditing, and management services for the Central Coast.

Jerry Allison and Chris Elliot introduced me to the CLCA Central Coast Chapter in the early 2000s when I was a student at the Cabrillo College Horticulture Department. At that time, I was part of the “next generation of horticulturists.” They inspired me to work hard and follow my dreams and eventually I was able to come full circle and become an instructor at Cabrillo. Over the last 12 years I’ve been able to teach and grow with hundreds of students who want to pursue their passions for horticulture and develop meaningful careers in the green industry.

This Spring 2023 semester I’ll be teaching two courses at Cabrillo:  Irrigation Systems Design and Management and Business Aspects of Horticulture. I’m eager to connect CLCA members with students to help grow the new generation of horticulturists. At Cabrillo College we are teaching your future employees and colleagues. Your input is crucial for us to continue to help students build fulfilling horticultural careers along the Central Coast. You can help us ensure that we’re providing students with the knowledge and skills that they need to help improve and differentiate your businesses. Throughout the year there will be opportunities for CLCA members to be guest speakers or help with hands-on projects at Cabrillo. These interactions help students connect with local professionals who excel at their trade and who are passionate about creating and maintaining high-quality, resource-efficient landscapes. Please contact me if you want to collaborate with the Cabrillo Horticulture Department this semester.

You should also consider supporting your staff by helping them build their knowledge and skills. Visit the Cabrillo College Horticulture courses page to see the Horticulture classes that will be offered this Spring semester at Cabrillo.

For over 40 years the Cabrillo Horticulture Department has been working hard to guide and develop skilled professionals for the local green industry. Please come visit our beautiful facility at the top of campus and see what we can do to train future local landscape professionals. While you’re there, remember to enjoy the best views in Santa Cruz County.

Michael Johnson is a Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) and Certified Agricultural Irrigation Specialist (CAIS) with the Irrigation Association.

For more information about the Cabrillo College Horticulture Department or California H2orticulture Services, call Michael at (831) 325-3376 or email michael.johnson@cabrillo.edu. Please don’t hesitate to contact Michael.
