Welcome to November! Things are gearing up to be a busy fall for the CLCA. We have elections for 2020 board member positions, the State Convention, and our annual Holiday Party. There are still multiple member seats open on the 2020 board and we are looking for people who have a desire to become more involved and make an impact in our industry. To learn more about the open positions and how you can join, please drop me a line or email. The State Convention is coming up next week and it’s expected to be a blast! If you haven’t booked reservations yet, there are still hotel rooms open at the low cost of $110/night, which the State was able to provide for us. It’s a great excuse to sneak up to Tahoe for a weekend and enjoy our beautiful backyard. Lastly, we have our central coast Holiday Party coming up on Thursday, December 5th. Katia has secured a wonderful location in Santa Cruz that I know everyone is going to enjoy. Find your invitations in this newsletter, follow the links to register. Another round of e-invitations will be sent soon!
I also want to address the changes coming our way in the next few months. It seems as if our state legislators have been working hard to make running a business in California even more difficult! There are many new laws and regulations going into effect on January 1, 2020, and I want to make sure that you don’t get a surprise lawsuit or even criminal charges from something you weren’t even aware of. The CLCA works diligently to fight for our right to operate in a profitable fashion and to be free from erroneous laws and regulations. To provide insight into a few of the changes that may directly impact your business, here are a few links to some of the new laws: AB 1565 Contractor Wage Liability , AB 3018 Skilled and Trained Workforce, SB 1300 Workplace Harassment , SB 1252 – Employee Right to Receive Copy of Pay Statement AB5 - Subcontractor and 1099 Regulations & SB 1412 Limitation on Use of Criminal Convictions. As a CLCA member, we want to make sure you have a leg up on the competition, which you can accomplish just by reading and informing yourself about these impending changes!
I hope to see you all at the Convention and the upcoming Holiday Party!
To our success,
Justin White

CLCA 2019 Convention Lake Tahoe
November 13-16 at Lake Tahoe the Central Coast Chapter was well represented at this year’s convention with Regan Barry, Phil Dundas, Jerry Allison, Efrain Reyes, Chris Elliot, Justin White, Andrew Tuckman and Craig Stenehjem.
Many Central Coast members of the CLCA convened at Lake Tahoe to network, learn, and play. Trophy awards were received by some for excellence in landscaping, see photos below. Thank you Tish O’Reilly being our photographer!
The UCSC Arboretum Home Garden tour was a big success this last spring, with eight small residential gardens ranging from the Santa Cruz Westside to Aptos. The individual homeowners did their own preparations, and the Arboretum Friends Board did an excellent job with organization, communication, set-up, direction of parking, and manned the tables at each of the gardens on the day of the event. It went very smoothly, and there were about 300 tickets sold. The gardens ranged from tightly designed urban spaces to larger lots that included edibles as well as ornamentals. Homeowners were delighted with the turnout and the opportunity to show their gardens to appreciative visitors. This year, the UCSC Arboretum would like to solicit gardens from among CLCA contractors’ clients and provide recognition for their work, hopefully to showcase larger properties that receive expert maintenance.
Please ask your clients, those who love to display their plants and designs, to consider being part of the 2020 event, we hope to have 5-6 gardens on the tour. The focus for the 2020 Home Garden Tour is “mountain properties”—from Bonny Doon to Soquel.
If you are interested in participating please contact Phil Dundas at The Landscape Company for more details.
Justin White will be speaking at the Lawn & Landscape Technology Conference, Feb 19-21 in Orlando, Florida! Industry professionals who have successfully integrated software and technology into their companies to operate more efficiently will make presentations.
An exhibit floor will give attendees a chance to learn about the latest technological advancements and find out which are the best fits to help run their businesses.
Whether you are already investing heavily in technology, or curious to learn where to start, this conference and trade show will help you become more knowledgeable about a rapidly changing topic.
