October 2022 Central Coast President’s Message

by Phil Dundas, Chapter President, The Landscape Company

Hello Landscape Community,
Darkness is creeping up on us!  Through this season we honor change, the fall harvest, and the circle of life with the fall equinox on September 22nd.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Annual Liar’s Cup Golf Tournament at Delaveaga Golf Club. Another beautiful way and day to be outside! Read the article to see who the winners were, though, of course we all were.

We have some great upcoming events. First, our Fall Mixer in Monterey, 5p.m. on Thursday, October 13th at DUST BOWL’S TAP DEPOT. Come and join the fun. No charge, just buy a beverage.

Shortly thereafter B&B SMALL ENGINE REPAIR is holding a Battery Expo at their Santa Cruz location (1700 Commercial Way) on Wednesday, October 19th, 4-7:00 p.m. Come learn about the new carb regulations and see what Stihl and Makita have to offer in battery-powered outdoor power equipment. There will be demos and a factory rep from Stihl. Learn what the upcoming ban means for the availability of power equipment in the future. There will be some pizza. We’re holding a raffle for a Stihl battery power tool Kit. Your $10 admission gives you one ticket for the raffle.

Our elections are coming up this November. If you are interested in any of the positions please contact me. We encourage you to come to one of our monthly board meetings and get involved with the Central Coast Chapter.

With Rasta Colors, Phil

Just for fun. Did you know that independent radio station KSQD, 90.7 FM and KSQD.ORG has local shows, possibly of interest? I stumbled on this one last Saturday. The “In the Garden” show with Joe Truskot, Saturdays, 9-10:00 a.m.

In the Garden presents information on best practices for home gardens, current weather conditions, information on upcoming garden-related events, details regarding assistance needed for community garden projects, and advice from expert guests.”

Fun to listen, or maybe we could contact them and do a “What is the Central Coast CLCA?” show. Or talk about a local community garden project, either completed or anticipated, or speak as an expert? https://widgets.spinitron.com/KSQD/show/101789/In-the-Garde

REcent event

Central Coast’s Annual Liar’s Cup Golf Event 2022

Niles Barry, the Coastal Evergreen Gang and Reagan Barry on the green at DeLaveaga Golf Course, Liar’s Cup 2022,

Golf bringing us all together on the green.— by Justin White

On September 15th, 2022, the Central Coast CLCA gathered at the Delaveaga Golf Course for the annual Liar’s Cup Invitational. Matt Gomez was at the registration table welcoming the teams and getting the event ready. Matt is always behind the scenes on these events ensuring all the pieces come together for the big day. On the 15th the course was in excellent condition, with the greens rolling true and fast. The weather was perfect at a nice 75 degrees and the players knew they were going to have to go low to have a chance at winning the tournament, as Scott Long and his team were defending their three-year winning streak. The structure of the day was a four-person scramble best ball, where each player took a shot, and then they would all go to the best shot and then all shoot again from there. This format allows for a quick round with low scores.

The players took off to their assigned holes, and the shotgun round began. It was clear the winning score was going to be low, with many groups getting birdies on their first few holes. As the round came to a close, the players tallied their scores and turned the scorecards into the pro shop for review and calculation to determine the winners. Everyone gathered in the range-side bar area to debrief on how their round went and share stories of great shots and not-so-great shots.

After about a half-hour, the scores were complete, and the winning team was identified. As Phil Dundas, our chapter president read the results everyone waited with anticipation to see who is going to take home the trophy. As the results came in we learned that Billy Crawford with K&D Landscaping Landscaping won the longest drive. Now it was on to the winning team of the day, and with a score of -15 under, Scott Long and his team took first place for the fourth year in a row!!!

Overall this event was a huge success for our members and our chapter. We hope everyone will join us at the next Liar’s Cup Invitational!"—Justin White
