Chris Elliot, a rich life with over 25 years in horticulture and nature, two decades of teaching locally, and loving family and friends.
Hello everyone, this is Chris Elliott, owner and operator of the Aqua Green Landscape Irrigation Company. Thank you Central Coast CLCA for the honor of being chosen as the Member of the Month.
Being a veteran for many years in horticulture and nature, let me start at the beginning. I was raised on a Farm in Linden, California, a great place to be from. My daddy and family taught me early on how hard work bears rich fruit. They taught me the value of working with soil, water, and the environment to grow such fruit. But after watching all that hard farm work compromised by events of Mother Nature, I thought “horticulture seems like a much safer avenue to success.”
I graduated from Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo with a BS degree in Ornamental Horticulture and have used my education, contacts, and experience in many different landscape-related ventures, including landscape maintenance and construction, golf course projects, irrigation product sales, and currently landscape irrigation.
While talking to Jerry Allison, who taught a Landscape Construction class at Cabrillo College, he said “Chris, Cabrillo would like to offer a Landscape Irrigation class, you should apply.” I said “Jerry I’ve never taught a class before.” Jerry replied “Neither had I, but it’s exciting, rewarding, and a lot of fun.” So with that encouragement I did apply and taught in the program for 25 years. And it was all of those things and much more. The most rewarding aspect, to this day, is seeing and meeting the many former students and hearing about the successes they have attained not only in horticulture, but in life. I’m so very proud of them and that I may have had a small part in their success.
None of this would have been possible without the love and support of my wife Valerie. Together we have sailed this ship over vast distance, choppy waters, as well as safe and smooth harbors. We raised three beautiful and successful children, and currently enjoy the next generation of three rambunctious grandchildren, who keep us hopping and young at heart.
Contrary to popular belief, I am still working part time, although a solo act now. It’s just that no one recognizes me since I sold my old beater Ford truck, and so I can fly under the radar.
