Scott Long of Central Coast Landscape
Over 40 Years in Santa Cruz County
Scott Long
Scott and his wife, Sue moved to Santa Cruz from Huntington Beach, CA in 1980 in search of better waves and a better way of life. Out of high school, Scott worked as a carpenter building homes and commercial buildings.
Shortly after moving here (“up north”) Scott and his friend, Jim scored a job building a large custom home in La Selva Beach, and framed some condos that got them through the first year. Then…the water moratorium hit. There were no permits being given for new construction and there was no work. Scott kept busy with some side work and chasing waves, while his wife, Sue was working for O’Neill surf shop. Sue made a connection with a guy she sold a wetsuit to, who was a “landscaper.” He was looking for some workers, and Scott landed the job. He was eager to learn a new trade. His first week on the job, he was at his new boss’s house building decks, gates, and fences with his own truck and tools. He was looking to learn a new trade, and learning is what he did! Not long after beginning, he was running his own crews, and outworking everyone, hungry for more. His boss wanted more workers like Scott and ended up hiring some of Scott’s friends.
Since Scott opted out of college, Scott’s dad, Jack Long had told him that he’d help him get something going when the time was right. This was it!
Ready for a new challenge, he told his boss he was looking into other opportunities. Scott’s boss then offered to sell him a piece of his business. Scott and Jack discussed the option and decided to take a leap of faith.
Central Coast Landscape was born! When Scott and his father, Jack Long started Central Coast Landscape in 1982, the company was just a van filled with single mower, a blower, an edger, a rake, etc. and running a single maintenance route. Over the last 40 years here in Santa Cruz County, Central Coast has grown to maintaining five or six full-time crews, including a construction “enhancement crew.”

Central Coast Landscape is proud to be a local multi-generational family owned and operated business. While Jack, Scott’s dad, and Scott’s mother, Jacqui have mostly retired, Scott’s daughter, Chanel Adams manages the office work. Scott’s wife of 42 years, Sue Long helps with reception and maintains a few flower accounts, and Scott’s son, Cameron Long is on one of Central Coast’s construction crews.
When Scott isn’t out there bidding jobs, in meetings, or checking on current projects, he can be found on the golf course.
Central Coast Landscape is honored to be a partner with the CLCA and everything that comes with the territory. We believe that it is important to stay connected with our industry partners and other like-minded individuals in the industry.
