September 2021 Central Coast President’s Message

by Justin White, Chapter President, K&D Landscaping Company

“Back Together Again”

Hello friends, and welcome to another month of our Seascape newsletter! We had an amazing Beautification Awards event last month in Santa Cruz. As always, the Dream Inn delivered with a beautiful venue, great food and wonderful weather. I want to thank all of our partners for their continued support of our chapter, these events really would not be possible without you all. (If you are interested in becoming a partner, you can find more information on our website on how to sign up.) I also want to thank the judges and our committee, who was led by Katia, that against constantly evolving challenges, made this event happen. We are hopeful that we will have an end-of-the-year celebration at some point in late November or early December, so stay tuned for updates in our October newsletter.

Water is constantly in the news these days, whether it is a story about the drought or another district enforcing mandatory restrictions on water use, every day you can find an article talking about this precious resource. The CLCA has been on the front lines for many years now trying to educate and conserve water for the betterment of the landscape industry and our community. We are continuing this mission of education in September with a great in-person irrigation design class offered by Hunter Irrigation. Many of us have arranged irrigation systems based on feel and experience, but it is very rare that we take the time to calculate water pressure, pipe size, and water volume when designing our systems. Hunter’s training specialist, Gregg Roesink, (CLIA, CIT, LICT, QWEL, CLVLT, RWSS) will be presenting some great information including how to properly design an irrigation system. Follow the link in the newsletter below to sign your team up today! Whether you are an owner or an entry-level employee, this class will provide you with great information. We all know how hard it is to find educated irrigation technicians, so I think it is best to train your own and that is what this class is all about.

Has Covid made us all lazy? I’ll be a bit vulnerable here and tell you what I’ve been feeling. As the Central Coast team and I began to put everything together for our Beautification Awards contest and dinner, I felt very overwhelmed with the number of decisions and variables we were facing. Would we be able to hold the dinner? Do we have to do this on Zoom? Will contractors even enter projects? Will judges want to come look at projects? Should we just call the entire event off this year due to “COVID”...? We decided to push through these feelings and put the event on anyway, thinking that if people didn’t feel comfortable to attend they didn’t have to, and that there were still a lot of people that wanted this event to happen. It would be up to us to make that work!

I think our society has become much too comfortable with canceling plans/events and retreating into our homes to avoid extra work. We have defaulted to Zoom meetings and text messages instead of in-person events and face-to-face communication. We all need to be smart and stay safe when it comes to Covid and by no means am I asking people to disregard their safety, but I think there is a happy medium we can find where we can still come together and celebrate while also protecting ourselves and those we love. We need to start asking ourselves what is the real reason we are canceling on our friends, family, and colleges? Are we doing this purely to stay safe or is there an underlying motive that is keeping us from living our life to the fullest? I hope everyone is staying healthy, keeping their community members safe and that you are still doing those things you love, life is too short to sit on the sidelines.

Sincerely,
Justin White
